Have you noticed?

Have you noticed the tiny change we’ve made to our site?

We’re massively excited to have our new album, Short Films on Self-Control, available for preview and download on our site.

We’re also putting the finishing touches on our new, full-featured site. Keep your eyes peeled for that. We’re pretty excited about it!

Until then, kick back and let the warm analog synths on Short Films on Self-Control wash your cares away. We hope you enjoy it!

three, two, one…

dear reader,

my posting is sadly in arrears. deepest apologies. i’m hoping you all had a great weekend, forgot to read this blog, and will resume with me on this monday afternoon as if nothing had happened and with renewed excitement for tomorrow.

honestly, i’ll be happy to abandon these every-day duties for a while, but i do feel the need to go out with a bang. here’s a glut of demos.

change of the seasons 1

that was also from “week’s worth,” and it’s one of my favorite demos. it was one of those songs that feels good right away.

the next three are from a disk call “three hearts” that i made and i think pretty much kept to myself. when trevor uploaded these for me today he remarked that he had never heard them. [he also said he was just about to punch a kitten in the throat. that’s just trevor. (just kidding, trevor is actually a sensitive guy whose jeans never wear out. and that’s the only true thing i’ve said here.)] each of these songs exceeds the legal limit for electronic kick drum.

the family dark 2

the next example contains a mercifully rare example of my bass playing. if i were mikael jorgensen, i’d definitely tell me not to play slap in the control room.

i am the loser 3

wow, i can’t imagine if this were on the album. the intro sounds like house. can you hear the hip hop claps?

not come around 2

i’m glad each of these songs landed where it did, although i’m not sure i want to think about the number of hours we spent as a band (in fact, the hours span multiple line-ups) bringing them in. in a way that makes tomorrow’s release that much sweeter.
if you don’t already know, the whole album will be available for listening and purchasing tomorrow on www.goodnightstates.com, and there’ll be a track or two available for free. help us get the word out, and above all have a safe a happy tuesday.

four (week’s worth, volume two)

dear reader,

just finished up rehearsal here. the new song sounds like… well, like the primordial ooze that it is.

it’s kind of reassuring to be writing about these demos during the potentially frustrating part of a new song; it reminds me that the process usually comes to a delightful close.

like this, for instance. “killer” sounds nothing like this on the record.

killer of the one 1

(thanks for reading. also, i’m tired from driving in the snow.)

five (week’s worth, volume one)

dear reader,

no unrelated editorials today, i promise.

in fact, since we’re going to be working on new material this weekend, i may not take the time to say very much else before tuesday’s big release. (but that’s not likely.)

“week’s worth” was another mini-album, although i seem to recall some band members exempting themselves from its reception in order to hear the songs as absolutely fresh in a rehearsal setting. that sort of thing has never really bothered me, and i usually try a song a few different ways before i commit to one.

for instance, this version of “i am the loser”–my brother reminded about this demo. if you like casio drums louder than death, this is your jam:

i am the loser 2

“week’s worth” also featured three new tracks that found their way onto the new album, and this was the first one:

far side of the boulevard 1

enjoy.
