Pittsburgh, PA

Us Pittsburgh folk just returned from driving to Nyack, NY to play a pseudo-acoustic show last night. Joe had another commitment out of town and when we were asked to play the show, the good folks at Riverspace told us that the venue was more suitable for an “acoustic” show as opposed to a “rock” show. So, we accepted, with a slightly strange “GN,S-pseudo-acoustic-but-still-more-electronics-than-most-other-bands” setup. I believe that Trevor is supposed to upload a video from the show sometime soon.

But that’s not the point.

The point is that the Pittsburgh connections abounded this evening:

-3/4 of the members of GN,S on stage were from Pittsburgh. FYI: That’s equivalent to 75%.
-The booking manager’s husband grew up in Pittsburgh and went to college here.
-The percussionist for the other band that evening previously lived in Pittsburgh and played with Rusted Root.
-The guitarist/singer for the other band that evening went to college in Pittsburgh.
-The box office manager grew up 30 min from the Pittsburgh area college that GN,S members attended.
-Despite the fact that Nyack, NY is 15 minutes from where Steve and Joe live in New Jersey, and the fact that the fans/friends who came to the show were all from that area, too, Steve introduced GN,S as being from Pittsburgh. Right on. Strong call, Steve.
-We drove to the show in Trevor and Megan’s Volkswagen Golf, as opposed to Blanche (our 15-passenger van). We saved both on gas and on leg room. Where did we drive from? Pittsburgh.
-We have a show next weekend on Sat, March 15 in Pittsburgh at Brillobox.

Pittsburgh is everywhere. It follows us on tour. We can’t escape it; we embrace it. So, my point is this:

You can take Good Night, States out of the ‘burgh, but you can’t the ‘burgh out of Good Night, States.

Special thanks to Melanie, Greg, Mark, Helene, and Heather at Riverspace. Thanks for inviting us and welcoming us and treating us so well. You’re doing great things in Nyack, NY. See you soon.

on sculptors

Friends -

On our 4-day East Coast mini-tour, we were accompanied by Emily-my-wife and Emily-not-my-wife, who handled merch, got us food, listened to tense arguments about road directions,  and were a welcome addition to our spacious van.

Emily-not-my-wife is always curious about the inner workings of GN, S and “interviewed” us about what it was about being in a band that was so great.  She asked us about our love of performing these songs, writing music, and how long we had dreamed of making music a reality in our lives.  I told here that I’ve known since Day One.

Sculptors use the language of “finding” the art within their medium; they say it doesn’t have so much to do with “creating” as it has to do with “finding”.  You chisel at marble, you shave at wood, and somehow the combination of your brain and your heart and the medium and the tools and the moment leads you to finding what it was meant to be.  That’s the way I feel when helping to shape these beautiful songs, and it brings me unimaginable joy to rehearse for hours on end with my four friends, to drive ungodly distances through the night, and to share these creations/findings with each of you.

Our new website is launched, our album has arrived at our doorstep by the thousands, and we’re all set to enjoy the night in Pittsburgh this weekend and release the album to the world.  We’re excited about upcoming shows and tours, interviews and press, and seeing the mountain of work we’ve put into this begin to carry us into more creating and finding of new songs, new fans, new venues, etc.  Thank you for being along on the journey.  As always with our tours, there are too many people to thank and too many memories to try to distill and convey what happened to us/you on this trip, but you know who you are - thanks.  To those of you who met/heard us for the first time this week, welcome; to those of you who saw us for the 2nd or 12th time - thanks for doing this with us.

Each of us in the band believes that there is something to the notion that we were made to do what we’re doing with this music and this group of people, and I, for one, am more excited than you can imagine about what it is that we’ll find as we continue forward together.

We hope you enjoy “Short Films On Self-Control” as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it and making it available to you and we’ll see you on the road soon.
