WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT GOOD NIGHT, STATES:

March 3, 2009 - Lux Magazine
“…Good Night, States came on stage after a brief intermission and I’ve never been more proud of the Pittsburgh music scene. They took the stage like true professionals and started singing and playing instruments that produced sounds so amazing that any type of wild beast would be tamed. I think it’s fairly clear I’m not good about talking about music, but do yourself a favor and listen. If this doesn’t cause you to immediately RSVP for their performance at the Thunderbird Cafe on the 27th, then you must not have ears…”

February 27, 2009 - Pittsburgh Dish
“…Good Night, States showed their mettle as a live band. Simply put, they floored us, and we grizzled old punks aren’t easily impressed. As on vinyl they hook you in with melody and hit you with a killer solo (yes, I said “killer”). And I’ve not seen many bands who can pull off live vocal harmonies like they can. Everybody sings. At the beginning of almost every song we would say how it reminded us of a different band only to agree by the end of the song that it didn’t sound like that band at all. As I’ve said before, they sound like Good Night, States.”

February 23, 2009 - Record Dept Music Reviews
“Pittsburgh based quintet Good Night States marries organic Americana sounds with electronic blips into meta indie pop. Their debut Short Films On Self-Control alternates between roots rock and lighthearted pop songs featuring sunny duet style harmonies, handclaps and electronic noises, giving the album an infectious upbeat quality. Songs fluctuate between rock songs like “Killer Of The One” and sing-alongs like “Not Come Around.””

January 11, 2009 - Don’t Fear The Mainstream
“Pittsburgh’s fastest-rising band, Good Night, States have earned a significant following in a relatively short amount of time. Much of their breezy pop music recalls Wilco, though they’re not as sleepy as Jeff Tweedy’s band sometimes gets. (Is it blasphemy to call Wilco boring? Guess what, I just did.) They also know how to market themselves, something that most local bands never seem to master.”

January 5, 2009 - Pop Damage
“Lead vocalist Steve Gretz shares a mumbling vocal presence with Dave Matthews, and a tendency towards vaguely new-agey lyrical fixations. On the instrumental side, he and his band bring on a delightful assault of guitar and synth driven rock that lit up the room and thawed the audience down to their toes.”

January 1, 2009 - Zed Equals Zee
“2008 Roundup: It’s really just about what I liked enough to spend a lot of time listening to this year. Good Night, States (Short Films on Self-Control, 2007): They also get bonus points for having my favourite artist website this year.”

December 31, 2008 - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
“In five, perhaps 10 years, it’s quite possible that we’ll look back on 2008 as the year a crop of new bands emerged from Pittsburgh that eventually took the country by storm…[Good Night, States] has an ingratiating, jangly pop sound, part New Pornographers, part Flaming Lips, but with enough of a twist to be different than just about anything else out there.”

November 23, 2008 - We Heart Music: Live Interview

November 14, 2008 - Zed Equals Zee
“One of the bands that’s on constant repeat in my media player right now is Pittsburgh’s Good Night, States. They sound like a stripped-down version of Arcade Fire - a little bit more catchy, and a little less bombastic…. I can’t help but stop whatever I’m doing to just listen whenever “Spring is the Winter’s End” comes on. They also get the z=z stamp of approval for making all their songs available on a pay-what-you-will basis at their website.”

October 22, 2008 - Hugh Shows Redux
“This band has a solid pop sense inherent in it’s music but what I was surprised to discover and quickly love is the ability by the band to totally ‘freak out’ at times. Not many groups can pull off ‘feedback/white noise’ mid-song without getting annoying. They certainly can and do. “

October 10, 2008 - USA TODAY’s Pop Candy
“There is also Good Night, States, a sweet-sounding Pittsburgh band. Song rec: The Family Dark.”

August 20, 2008 - She Moves In Her Own Way
“Good Night, States are currently rocking my world a little bit. They satisfy just about every facet of my indie-pop requirements and, for an added bonus, they’re from Pittsburgh! Who knew we had the makings of a legit indie scene in the ‘burgh?

August 15, 2008 - SPIN Magazine
“Like Ryan Adams singing for the Boy Least Likely To, Good Night, States marry singer-songwriter vocal stylings and confessional lyrics to near-twee tunes anchored by electronic blips, xylophone and the occasional drum machine.”

August 1, 2008 - Brooklyn Rocks
“The band’s music is solid, thoughtful indie-rock but it is the multi-part harmonies, the tasteful synth/piano and the multi-instrument/multi-layers of sound that grabbed and held my attention throughout the disc. This is good stuff…”

July 23, 2008 - A Blog Of A Good Time
“I’ve listened to their new album, Short Films On Self-Control, a few times through now and each time I hear something that makes me want to start the process all over again. It’s like the first time you ride a rollercoaster, get off, and immediately get back in line again and again.”

July 8, 2008 - The Schlog
“Suffice to say Good Night, States gets it right. The music is catchy enough to get you hooked, but the depth of the music is what will keep you listening.”

July 7, 2008 - The BNAC Music Blog
“The disc is a solid indie pop debut that sounds very much like an ALBUM… Good Night, States seem to be in the minority of bands who truly understand the importance of an LP. That is very refreshing, as is the impressive musicianship.”

July 3, 2008 - Local scene: ‘YEP Fest, The Morning Light, The Coast
Scott Mervis, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

June 17, 2008 - Pittsburgh Dish
“A gorgeous, melodic album with songs that immediately draw you in; a kind of “just right” sound-production that most bands go their whole career without achieving… What they sound like is Good Night, States and they deserve to have other bands compared to them.”

May 30, 2008 - Kofi’s Hat Blog
“Exuberant, hook-laden, occasionally Baroque-pop-flavored songs buzzing with synth-fueled energy and brightness.”

March 17, 2008 - nah pop, no style
“A certain complexity to the song structures that I didn’t even register that much upon my first several listens, but which makes it a fun record to listen to over and over.”

February 7, 2008 - Good Night, States collaborate across state lines
Andy Mulkerin, Pittsburgh City Paper
“What Good Night, States has released is a solid pop record that’s a notch above most everything similar that’s being released locally at this point, and one that could hold its own against most national competition.”

January 30, 2008 - Good Night, States returns to area
Travis Talbot, The Daily Collegian

January 17, 2008 - The Fire Note
“You will immediately be attracted to the solid songwriting and hooks on Short Films On Self-Control that will keep you coming back for repeat listens.”

January 13, 2008 - Sleepy Dog Music Blog
“The instrumentation and production value [are] awesome and the vocals (lead and harmony) are lush and spot on. Their lyrics are smart, but not smugly clever, spiritual without being preachy, and well crafted without being too contrived.”

January 8, 2008 - Rusty Bridge
“The songs are extremely catchy, joyful, and will leave you singing along.”
