River In The Dry

Young girl came
Tracks in her diary
And walked the island town
She spoke my name
Flushed with desiring
And plied with tearful eye
But I’d long drowned
River in the dry

Divorcée
Old and remembering
Struck my dreaming down
She said, "Mind what may–
"Boy, start your trembling"
But neither can she buy
What I’ve long found
River in the dry

With shores on the empty expanse of sand
Lay down, you weary, lay down
Fill all your emptiness

Once I came
Heavy and wandering
Laid my struggling down
Changed my name
Changed my desiring
One day you will lie
Where I long drowned
River in the dry
